The policy document written after Claire’s successful Latin(o) American Digital Art exhibition at FACT Liverpool in 2014 has been translated into Spanish and distributed among Latin American institutions.
In October 2016, Claire was awarded Impact Acceleration funding from the University of Liverpool to carry out work on the project Latin American Art and Museum Policy, arising from her previous research into digital art in Latin America. Joining her in the research team as Research Associate is Ailsa Peate, who had already worked with Claire earlier on the Cities in Dialogue events at the V&A in London. Working together on this new project, Claire and Ailsa have been collaborating with National Museums Liverpool and supporting their work with human rights museums in Latin America.
As part of this project, Claire and Ailsa revisited the policy document created after exhibiting the digital artwork of four Latin American artists at FACT in 2014. The document has since been translated into Spanish and disseminated to museums, galleries, and action groups with a thematic focus on military dictatorship, state violence, memory, and trauma in six Latin American countries. The policy document provides guidance for these institutions when approaching exhibiting digital artworks which deal with memory and trauma in a physical space; when running workshops on the topic through the use of digital arts; when considering the most productive manner in which to engage the public in thought on the topic of dictatorship and memory through a digital approach, and provides insight into Twitter curation as a means through which to expand on the physical creative space of the gallery/museum among other objectives.
The distribution of the policy document is one aim of the Latin American Art and Museum Policy project, which will culminate in the presentation of research findings at the Museo para la Democracia Internacional in Rosario, Argentina, in November 2017, at the annual FIHRM (Federation of International Human Rights Museums) conference.
